V.K. Le Page; Published 1990; Math and Education; Mathematics; Economics; Social Science. The objective of this book is to make mathematics understandable to the non-mathematician. The authors follow the ideas of A.K. Sen and P.B. Verma. The authors make a clear distinction between concepts and algorithms, with separate chapters on algebra, linear programming, calculus, geometry, elementary statistics and probability, stochastic processes and introductory economics. The text is clearly explained and the table of contents demonstrates the practical application.
S. Lindenmeyer; Published 1992; History and Theories of Science; Economics; Social Science; Biology. The structure of this book is broad in scope and may be very useful for students who have not yet taken a course in economics. The book is written for the general reader and the treatments are clearly focused on the particular subject. At the beginning of each chapter, the authors make a clear distinction between the various meanings of the words,'science', 'economics','society', 'policies', 'economics' and 'economics', thus making the reader more conscious of the different meanings of the words and the issues which underlie the use of each of the words. They give particular attention to the use of different words in science, which is a missing component in a book on economic history.
R.L. Lippit and C.G. Pappas; Published 1992; Biology; Ecology; Physiology; Anatomy; Physiology. The book gives the student a well-rounded view of the structure of plant and animal organisms. It reviews basic concepts and discusses the major features of anatomy, physiology and biochemistry, and how the two relate to each other. The authors emphasize the importance of common sense to the understanding of the sciences and show that it is the use of common sense which enables scientists to communicate with each other. The text is accessible and interesting and the illustrations are high quality.
J.L. Low; Published 1992; Biochemistry; Physiology; Microbiology; Cell Biology; Genetics; Cellular Biology; Molecular Biology; Physiology. The text is clearly written and the author has followed the 'no guesswork' approach to the teaching of physiology. The text is excellent
